Fort Amberd on Mount Agarak

From far we could see this 4090 m high mountain the last days. It’s the Mount Agarak, the highest mountain of Armenia.

Before we visit Yerevan we want to check how far we can get up the Mt Agarak. The road is okay until around 2200m, from there the road is covered with fresh snow. It’s an icy cold night but a beautiful eastern sunday morning.

After breakfast we take our split-boards and walk through the heavy spring snow some hours up the mountain and snowboarding down. Hmmm great!

The afternoon we try to reach Fort Ambert. But even with snow chains it’s impossible to drive with the truck in this with around 1,50m muddy snow covered 6 km long road towards the fortress.

So we take a beautiful 12 km hiking trail this morning almost up to the fortress. The special thing is the place: spectacular view ( with good weather) on the top on a ridge with Mt Agarak in the background, the rest is again some left walls of old stones.
