Karkyra-avtodorožnyj border from Kyrgyzstan to Kazakhstan October 2024

In October 2024 we passed the Karkyra-avtodorožnyj border from Kyrgyzstan to Kazakhstan. For the first time since 2 years everything was checked bij both sides of the border including our boxes on the roof. Did never happened and they checked with dogs asking if we had drugs.

All together the passage went very fast, we did not even need 30 minutes.

Our passports got stamped and we had to show the car passport and that was all there was to it. No extra papers, no payments, nothing.

The borders are open whole year (since 2024) and every day of the week. Be aware of the time difference between one side of the border and the other. The Kazakhstan border is open from 07:00-17:00.

There are no facilities at the border, no atm and no place to buy your insurance.

Airport Almaty from the Netherlands nov. 2025

We went home for christmass 2025 and reentered Kazakhstan march. Entering via Almaty airport went smooth and without costs. We took a Yandex Go (install the app before you arrive) taxi to the city.

Yallama – K.Konsbaev border UZ-KZ April 2025

It is good to know that the other Tashkent border crossing, Kaplan border and Jibek Joley are only for max 3.5 ton vehicles.

We arrived at 7:30 UZ-KZ with our campertruck. We could pass the 3 km line with trucks waiting for the border. The Uzbekistan paper work and inspection were done in 45 min. But then the waiting in line to get through the exit gate began. It had the word that KZ opens at 10:00 hours and it did.

After 3 hours waiting in the vehicle it was our turn to enter passport control Kazakhstan 12:30. Everybody was very kind, the proces clear. There are just too many cars and trucks and not enough officers. Customs and inspection took 15 minutes. X-ray had a queue which took another 15 minutes. And then, I needed a Car Declaration form which costs 2.000 sum but an extra hour.
We entered Kazakhstan after 5,5 hours at 14:10

Bishkek – Qorday

KG-KZ mai 2025

Due to a technical problem with the truck we wanted to go to Almaty. We entered the border Saturday 17:45. no traffic and I left Kyrgyzstan with the Unimog faster then Kirstin walking. Entering Kazakhstan was fast too, first I had to pick up the border passing form, and then I got the passport check at the booth opposite. After this there is the x-ray and car check. Altogether it took one hour.

Taraz – Kyzyl-Adir

KG – KZ june 2025

Sunday 11:15 hours. 2 trucks and 3 cars waiting at the gate. It took us 30 minutes to get in.

The Kyrgyz. Order took 10 minutes. As always there is the question, how much costs this capertruck. As always my answer is, that truck is 30 years old, the cabin we buildup our selves.

Translating my passport took most time. 12:15 ready

And then…

There is corruption in Kazakhstan. We got pulled over by the police and they tolled me I broke a rule and they would take my drivers license for 6 months. But… because I was nice they could help. I needed to pay 50.000 (euro 100,-) cash. We have a little wallet with almost no money and I showed them we hade no cash. After half an hour they let us go without paying. We heard different stories and they especially pull you over in areas without cellphone coverage.

Note: we travelled Kazakhstan for 3 months and this incident was the only bad one we had. Police was very helpful all the time. So do not let this one incident influence you.

Our truck

Diesel is cheaper in Kazakhstan then Kyrgyzstan.

It is mandatory to have headlights on at all times.

The truck is allowed to stay in the Earasian union for 12 months. Since Uzbekistan is no part of this, border hopping is a good way to get a new 12 months. You need to give back the paper you received while entering Eurasian!

Insurance and road tax

In Kazakhstan there is no road tax for foreigners and we also do not have to pay on the toll road around Almaty.

The insurance you need to buy in the major cities. We bought a 2 months insurance from Nomad insurance for 55.000,- T = euro 100,- Nomad is also English spoken available via Whatsapp

Money

Because as a foreigner it is almost impossible to get the mainstream payment system Kazpi.kz we can also not pay parking fees in the city’s.

Sim card internet

Although we have Starlink who works everywhere in Kazakhstan we find it handy to have a sim card for paragliding or when roaming the city. Unlimited internet for one month cost € 8,-

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is an economic union of several former Soviet countries. The rules for the temporary stay of a vehicle with Dutch license plates vary by country, but the maximum allowed duration is usually 12 months, with possible restrictions or requirements such as temporary importation or registration.

Member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU):

  • Russia
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Armenia
  • Belarus

To prevent overstaying the 12 months we did some border hopping to Uzbekistan.

Be aware: at entering one of these countries with your vehicle you receive a document. Keep this document safe; it must be handed in again when leaving the EAEU.
